Overusing fertilizer is expensive and has created a dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico the size of New Jersey. One third of the world's fisheries are overfished. Air pollution leads to over 8 million deaths each year worldwide. 

At the same time, it's easy to criticize these practices when you don't have to worry about how you will feed your family. So how do you balance the needs of today with the debt that these environmentally harmful practices are creating? And let's be clear: If a business practice isn't sustainable, by definition, it can't last. It's debt, plain and simple.

We're big believers in the power of business innovation to solve problems. We've also seen the value of on-the-ground insights from NGOs. The best solutions emerge when capital and environmental stewardship move in the same direction.
